Last month, the biggest technology website in the Netherlands, Tweakers paid a visit to our Veldhoven office to find out what Simulated Reality is all about.
During their visit the Tweakers team tested the technology and spoke to a few members of our team where they learned all about the history of Dimenco, the origins of Simulated Reality and what the future looks like for Dimenco and SR.
Dimenco Simulated Reality - 3d without glasses, from Dutch soil
About ten years ago, TV manufacturers were busy developing 3D TVs. Many TVs had the ability to display 3D movies, but viewers had to put on glasses to do so. TV manufacturers had big plans for autostereoscopic 3D TVs, with a special layer for 3D viewing without glasses. Numerous prototypes were shown, but such TVs never reached the consumer market. 3d has also died a quiet death on the PC market. The 3D hype has largely blown over, but one product did become a success: the Nintendo 3DS. That handheld appeared in 2011, in the heyday of 3D TVs.
It has been quiet for years around 3D screens, but if it is up to the Dutch company Dimenco from Veldhoven, that will soon change. The company was founded in 2010 as a spin-off from Philips and has further developed the glasses-free 3D technology. Dimenco now calls it Simulated Reality and it works in conjunction with sensors that track your eyes and hands, which also allows interaction with the 3D image. At the end of May, Acer announced a laptop with a screen that can show 3D images without glasses and the Taiwanese manufacturer uses Dimenco's Simulated Reality technology for this. We went to Veldhoven to talk to the makers and see exactly how that works.
