Dimenco showcases best in class real-time conversion for non-glasses 3D displays
Dimenco enables 3D Stereo and 2D content for non-glasses 3D displays
Unique algorithms transfer 3D Stereo and regular 2D content into a stunning 3D experience without the need for special glasses.
Eindhoven the Netherlands, 9th of January 2012: Dimenco, the leading technology company in the field of auto-stereoscopic displays – non-glasses 3D displays, announced today that it will present its new Dimenco Rendering Core Premium for non-glasses 3D displays at CES 2012, January 9, at the Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas.
Until now, auto-stereoscopic (no glasses 3D) displays were depending on specially prepared content and would be mainly used in professional industries, such as advertising, visualization, and interactive applications. The reason for this is all non-glasses multi-view 3D displays are dependent on multiple views, ranging from 5 to 28 view points, instead of a single (2D) or stereo (3D with glasses) view.
Dimenco Rendering Core
Last year Dimenco previously introduced its Dimenco Rendering Core, which works with the Dimenco interface format (2D+Z) giving both content creators and end-users full real-time control of the viewing characteristics (amount of depth, viewing distance, offset) and simplicity of content creation. For this reason this Rendering Core was chosen by the Philips Signage Division (MMD) in 2011 to integrate in their 3D displays without glasses.
This year Dimenco introduces the Dimenco Rendering Core Premium, which now enables the conversion of single (2D) and stereo (3D with glasses) content to play on auto-stereoscopic (non-glasses 3D) displays that have this Core integrated. “a consumer would never accept that it cannot experience its existing 3D content on a non-glasses 3D display” says Pieter de Jong co-founder and project manager real-time conversion of Dimenco. “we have seen that technology must be simple, understandable and have stunning quality, our real-time conversion is the logical and best solution for this”.
The stunning quality of the Dimenco Rendering Core has also already been acknowledged by the Philips Signage Division (MMD). The Dimenco Rendering Core will be integrated within all Philips Commercial Signage 42” and 55” non-glasses 3D displays and can be enabled via a special software
tool for E299,. Dimenco is further open to offer its Rendering Core as Chipset or IP-core to other display manufacturers that are interested.

Philips has shown off the latest iteration of its in development glasses-free 3D TV at IFA 2011 to much praise
Whilst Toshiba officially launched the world’s first consumer available glasses-free 3D television set at IFA 2011 yesterday, Philips is still honing its already appealing extra-dimensional anti-specs offering.

Although currently unavailable for purchase, Philips’ glasses-free 3D TV is hugely impressive with its no glasses approach to extra-dimension broadcasting one of the best on display at the Berlin-based tech show.
Less impactful than its active and passive glasses touting counterparts, the 3D elements of the specs-free offering are more subtle, almost understated, yet make a noticeable impression and add to content narrative and image effect in a less obtrusive way to some 3D sets.
Despite hosting the currently unproved glasses-free 3D technology Philips has managed to maintain its high image quality with colours still vibrant, covering off a deep spectrum of intricate hues and, given the right viewing angle, boasting crisp, sharp edges even on moving content.
The major downfall of glasses-free 3D at present is the minimalist sweet spot. When positioned directly centred in front of the screen 3D content emerges in a natural, appealing manner. Move fractionally out of this perfect line of sight, however, and the extra-dimensional effects become less effective with blurred edges.
On first impressions Philips’ glasses-free 3D TV feels less strenuous on your eyes than active and passive units although the effect it has over continued and prolonged use is currently unknown.
Whilst Toshiba looks to create a secondary market from an already stuttering 3D scene, Philips’ constantly progressing glasses-free option will no doubt be one to watch out for entering the market as a potential leader of the second, more established, generation.
Hands on: Toshiba 55ZL2 review IFA 2011: The UK’s first glasses-free 3D TV goes on display
Uncategorized Comments OffIFA 2011: The UK’s first glasses-free 3D TV goes on display
The Toshiba 55ZL2: could do better
If you’re looking to buy a top-of-the-line 3D TV this Christmas, we have to say that from our showfloor look at the set today at IFA 2011 the Toshiba 55ZL2 is probably not the TV you’re looking for.
It’s the UK’s first glasses-free 3D TV, and the specsheet is certainly impressive: glasses-free 3D on a 55-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 3840×2160… so what’s not to like?
The problem we found is that the 3D effect is so minimal as to be almost unnoticeable. We weren’t hugely impressed with Toshiba’s glasses-free prototypes when we saw them at CES, but we were expecting a lot more from the final product.
Admittedly, we were viewing the 55ZL2 on the Toshiba stand rather than in a living room set-up, and we hope that it will fare better when we get one in for a full review, but for now it seems a bit of a let down.
Indeed, the updated Philips glasses-free prototype which is on display at its stand at IFA is far and away more impressive, despite not being a finished product.
At this stage, we can’t think of a many positive things to say about this TV, although 2D performance did look decent. The 3D picture was sub-full HD, too, despite the high resolution of the panel. This is because the lenticular lenses filter the light into nine different sweet spots, diluting the resolution in the process.
Often, the 3D had so little depth to it that we struggled to work out whether what we were watching was 3D or not. Several demos and trailers rolled by without any jaw-dropping depth or eye-popping surprises.
Of course, we’ll give this telly a proper chance when the review samples roll in in December with a full, in-depth Toshiba 55ZL2 review, so we won’t deliver a final verdict just yet. But if you’re planning a big purchase before 2011 is out, we worry that this TV might not be the answer to your 3D dreams.
